Hong Kong Recognizes Bitcoin and Ethereum for Investment Immigration Applications 🇭🇰

Hong Kong authorities have recognized Bitcoin and Ethereum as valid assets for investment immigration applications, marking a significant step towards the integration of digital assets in their financial system. This decision reflects the region's increasing openness and acceptance of cryptocurrencies as legitimate forms of wealth for immigration purposes.

Two applicants have already been approved using Bitcoin and Ethereum to meet the investment immigration threshold, as reported by Colin Wu. An accountant named Xiao Yaohe revealed that one of his clients secured approval using Ethereum valued at HK$30 million, approximately $3.8 million, as proof of assets. It suggests a shift in Hong Kong’s immigration policies towards embracing cryptocurrency adoption.

Authorities confirmed these approvals followed extensive internal discussions. Additionally, two more applications with cryptocurrency holdings are under review. To qualify for this program, applicants must own at least HK$30 million in assets and invest the same amount in Hong Kong within six months.

This evolution positions Hong Kong as an ambitious global hub for digital finance, showcasing its efforts to establish robust regulatory frameworks for stablecoins and crypto exchanges. However, it is still unclear if direct cryptocurrency investments or crypto-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs) will qualify under these approvals. Successful applicants will initially receive a two-year visa, requiring three renewals before achieving permanent residency status.
